Unions say Apple expected to fly under the radar in pushing through a new agreement for its 4000 retail staff. But workers have responded by self-organising.
Apple has been accused of seeking to ram through a new agreement with below-inflation wage rises, no evening penalty rates and clauses that could see workers work up to 60 hours a week without overtime.
The talks represent the first time that Apple has had to negotiate with unions over the pay and conditions of almost 4000 employees across 22 retail sites.accused Apple of trying to “sneak through an agreement that would see its Australian workers going backwards”.“With inflation above 6 per cent and rising, this would see Apple employees already struggling with the cost of living finding it even more difficult to pay for food, fuel, shelter and the other essentials of life,” he said.
The agreement would pay workers at least $27.64 an hour or a minimum of $54,617 a year as well as penalty rates on weekends. A spokesman for Apple denied it had set any deadlines and “welcome[d] the opportunity for participation and engagement with our team members”. The SDA and ASU allege that the company’s actions breach good faith bargaining principles outlined in the Fair Work Act and would seek orders for Apple to allow them time to meaningfully engage workers.SDA organisers say when they exercised right of entry powers to talk to Apple workers in South Australia, management insisted they sign non-disclosure agreements. When they refused, they were told to leave the site and were escorted off the premises.
