Like Australia, Norway is a constitutional monarchy and a liberal democracy with some of the highest living standards in the world. But historical dispossession and discrimination still cast a long shadow over the lives of Indigenous peoples in both countries. These are the tangible, practical benefits of listening to Indigenous peoples on matters that affect them. As the Uluru statement from the heart so elegantly explains: “When we have power over our destiny our children will flourish. They will walk in two worlds and their culture will be a gift to their country.”
