As temperatures soar, Victoria is covered in smoke from the NSW bushfires

The Bureau of Meteorology expects the heat to keep climbing to 44C.State Control Centre spokesman Luke Heagerty said the fire danger was greatest in the Wimmera and South West districts, where it was rated as extreme.

Smoke, from fires burning in NSW and in Gippsland, has reduced visibility to about a kilometre in some parts of the state. Victoria's Environment Protection Authority said the air quality in East Gippsland and parts of the north-east of Victoria was very poor early this afternoon.
