Australian politicians Andrew Hastie and Anthony Byrne played a crucial role in overturning the pro-Huawei policy in the United Kingdom according to Former Labor Senator Stephen Conroy.

In a major about-turn, Prime Minister Boris Johnspm banned the purchase of any new 5G equipment from the Chinese tech giant from the end of this year. Downing Street previously allowed Huawei to have a role in the UK's 5G infrastructure, a decision made little more than six months ago.

Mr Conroy, who banned Huawei from the Australian National Broadband Network build in 2011, pointed out much had changed in the world since the UK government first decided allow Huawei into the 5G network. He commended Mr Hastie and Mr Byrn for working behind the scenes with the UK Foreign Minister and a number of backbenchers to force the Johnson government to take the “potential for Chinese infiltration seriously”.
