Business leaders say China is unlikely to lift tariffs on Australian exports even if relations improve under the Albanese government.
| Australian exporters say there is little chance China will lift tariffs and restrictions on $20 billion worth of Australian goods even if bilateral relations improve under the Albanese government.
Business leaders said that although there were signs of relations improving under the new government, there was still a lot of work to do to improve commercial ties.“It’s not galloping, but it’s not going backwards,” said Warwick Smith, who heads the Business Council of Australia’s global engagement commitment, when asked about Australia’s commercial relationship with China since the change of government.
Mr Biden is considering scrapping tariffs imposed on Chinese goods by his predecessor Donald Trump to curb inflation, US media reports said this week. He said there were discussions under way about sending re-establishing business dialogue with Beijing but COVID-19 and China’s strict quarantine rules meant it would be tricky to send a delegation to China for the time being.
