Lithuanian-born Australian Holocaust survivor Phillip Maisel has died in Melbourne -just weeks after celebrating his 100th birthday with his twin sister Bella, who he was reunited with after the war.

The author of the inspiring memoir The Keeper of Miracles spent more than 30 years recording the harrowing stories of 1400 fellow survivors as a volunteer at the Melbourne Holocaust Museum.

Despite the countless heart-breaking accounts he had recorded, Mr Maisel told The Australian last year, that he comforted himself with the knowledge that unlike the millions of others, they had survived. Born in the Lithuanian capital of Vilna in 1922, Mr Maisel endured two years in a Jewish ghetto rife with disease and starvation, before being imprisoned in multiple Nazi labour and concentration camps.
