Gold production at the Ballarat gold mine reduced to a trickle last week after the Victorian government was notified that tailings dams were almost full.
has ground to a halt amid concern the dams that hold “tailings” or waste are almost full, in the latest setback for the Singaporean owners of the mine.
“We will continue to work with the licensee to understand their current options, forward tailings management strategy and provide guidance on the relevant regulatory requirements,” said Laura Helm, the acting executive director of Victoria’s Earth Resources Regulation. “The board is of the view that the limitation in terms of the capacity of the current tailings storage facility is not expected to affect the going concern of the company,” said the company in a market filing signed by executive director Yao Liang.
