A high-profile property developer allegedly complained about the NSW government’s contentious koala protection policy before Deputy Premier John Barilaro’s failed coup over the issue. Planning Minister Rob Stokes told Nine Newspapers, Australian businessman Jeff McCloy's complaint was the only correspondence passed to his office by the Deputy Premier.

Mr McCloy said the policy would make some land impossible to develop. Last week, a breakaway group of Nationals MPs, including Mr Barilaro, threatened to move to the crossbench over their government’s update to the planning laws which included protections for koala habitats. Ms Berejiklian issued an ultimatum on Thursday to Mr Barilaro who ultimately backed down on Friday morning after a one-on-one meeting with the NSW Premier.
