Roxie's, a popular garden bar in Adelaide's central business district, will shut its doors after 14 years due to redevelopment plans. The venue's owner, Tom Skipper, announced the closure on Monday, stating that a Singaporean developer had purchased the land where Roxie's operated. While the historic cranker (a rooftop bar) was saved through a landmark agreement, the redevelopment necessitates the closure of Roxie's to make way for a new student accommodation tower.

A beloved garden bar in the heart of Adelaide’s CBD will close its doors after 14 years, leaving hundreds of locals devastated. Roxie’s announced the sad news on Monday, with owner Tom Skipper saying the closure comes after a developer purchased the block of land that his venue operated on. “When Singaporean developer Wee Hur purchased our block, we knew change was coming,” Mr Skipper’s statement read.

“Each iteration carving its place in Adelaide’s nightlife “What started as an experiment became a legacy an it wouldn’t have been possible without you — the people it made it what it was.” Mr Skipper confirmed the venue’s last day will be May 25 but he said he wants customers to help send Roxie’s off with good drinks, great music and “a party that won’t be forgotten”. Hundreds of locals reacted to the announcement on Facebook, with many saying they will miss the iconic venue.
