Elizabeth Dalman, the founder of the Australian Dance Theatre, has returned at 90 to help devise the company's next Adelaide Festival show, A Quiet Language. Dalman, known for her rigorous energy and eye for detail, launched ADT in 1965 and is now back at the helm, guiding the company's cutting-edge modern dance performance.

The founder of Australian Dance Theatre Elizabeth Dalman has returned to help devise the company's next Adelaide Festival show. What's next?abc.net.au/news/dance-founder-returns-to-roots/104832630It's hot and sticky in the middle of a baking Adelaide summer's day and 90-year-old Elizabeth Dalman is pushing dancers in the Australian Dance Theatre through another punishing session.

That's in stark contrast to when a young Dalman brought modern dance back from the Netherlands to Adelaide, where she was born and raised.(" started off as a rebellion against the classical ballet, which was a very unnatural way of training the body and the early pioneers wanted to find a more natural way for the body to move," she explained.

Dalman parted ways with ADT in 1975 and spent time dancing and teaching in Italy and the Netherlands.Someone hitting the 90-year mark could be forgiven for taking things easy. "It's joyous, it's massive, it's fun, there's a lot of kind of homage to movement, Australian movement from the past till now," dancer Zachary Lopez said about the rehearsals.
