Much-loved larrikin priest FatherBob Maguire has died aged 88. 7NEWS

Maguire gained a scholarship to Christian Brothers College in St Kilda, where he studied from 1948 - the year his father died - to 1953.After leaving school, Maguire studied theology at Corpus Christi College in Melbourne, and was ordained at 25. “I thought I’d entered the badlands, a place where refugees from life were gathering,” he wrote in a message on the foundation website.Australian Opposition Leader Anthony Albanese is greeted by Father Bob Maguire during a visit to Father Bob Maguire Foundation.The foundation was styled on Maguire’s “revolutionary approach to social justice”, and its workers became irreverently known as the “Bob Squad”, with the slogan “Viva La Bob”.
He also became involved as a media ‘frontman’, hosting a radio show on Melbourne’s 3AW, as well as co-presenting Speaking in Tongues on SBS TV, alongside renowned satirist John Safran.
