A former BHP manager says he was ordered to fill vacancies with female candidates before interviews were conducted as part of a rush to achieve gender balance

A former manager at BHP says he was ordered to fill vacancies with female candidates as his superiors strived to achieve the company’s ambitious gender targets, adding to the sex discrimination claims raised by a second man last year.

Mr Powers’ lawyers this month pointed to a new claim of gender discrimination made by BHP’s former “manager for regional Caribbean exploration”, Adrian Purdy.Mr Purdy filed an affidavit to the Texas court hearing Mr Powers’ case, saying that BHP’s senior management were “super aggressive” about increasing the number of females at the company.

“I was repeatedly informed by senior managers at BHP that it was of paramount importance to hire, retain and promote as many females as possible,” he said in the affidavit.Statistics published by BHP this month show that female representation among new hires has risen from 10 per cent in 2015 to more than 47 per cent in the year to June.

He said he never heard back about the EthicsPoint complaint and was “laid off” during the next round of lay-offs, which is understood to have been in early 2019.
