Wildlife rescuers on the New South Wales north coast say there has been a dramatic spike in the number of seabirds being injured by fishing tackle.

The NSW Recreational Fishers Alliance says the popularity of the sport has increased during the pandemic.

Another is being nursed back to health, suffering from heavy metal poisoning after swallowing two lead sinkers. Wildlife rescuers say it is often difficult to remove fishing line and lures ingested by birds, such as this Crested Tern.Ms Pitt said the number of reports had increased from about one a week to one or two a day."People are starting to enjoy the little things in life again, and that might be fishing, and that's okay, but what we need to do now is make sure these newcomers to the sport are learning to respect the ocean," she said.

"It's a blessing in one way that we are boosting the economy with recreational fishing but we are really missing out on opportunities to educate new anglers," he said.
