When she was 15 years old, Haromi Poutapu tuned in to a DJ set live streamed from Montreal. Eleven years later, she has performed at Brisbane's first-ever Boiler Room event.
Torrential rain has not stopped supporters of Brisbane's local music scene flocking to the RNA showgrounds for the city's first Boiler Room event.
"All three of us came up at the same time in our own different ways, but within the up-and-coming Meanjin scene that has now blossomed to the way it is now," she said."You have these ideas in your head of where you want to go as a DJ and some of them are more achievable than others," Thomas said.Thomas said the Boiler Room event was a chance to challenge people's expectations.
"I feel like people sleep on Brisbane, but we've got so many talented musicians and creative," she said."I've always been watching the YouTube videos. And finally, Boiler Room in Brisbane, it's just a dream come true," he said.Brisbane's first Boiler Room set featuring women of colour was representative of the city's diverse music scene, Poutapu said.
"It wasn't until I realised that I have a passion and love for music that it was able to be used as a tool to guide me to my ancestral roots."A new dance scene has emerged as young people turn to boiler rooms and away from music festivals. "I like to look into the crowd, see who's there, and just be like, 'They might like, this they might like that.'"
"Sometimes people will be like, 'You've only got there because you're a woman of colour,'" Thomas said.
