A man who declared he wanted to be a martyr before rushing at police with a hatchet during a tense standoff at Barnawartha North is sentenced to 21 months in jail.

A man who declared he wanted to be a martyr before rushing at police with a hatchet during a tense standoff in the Victorian bush has been sentenced to 21 months in jail.

But Victoria's County Court heard that Joel Clavell, 20, had no memory of telling officers to lay down their guns so he could chop their heads off. With time already served, the newly-married man, who met his bride through a Muslim dating website, will be back in the community by March next year. Meanwhile his brother, 31-year-old Joshua Clavell, who was also involved in the standoff, will spend four years and eight months behind bars after ramming police.

Judge Martine Marich described the offending as serious and said the conduct of the men was serious and reprehensible.More to come.
