Virtually all global models warn there is a high risk of El Niño developing late this year, which would mean our weather stories shifting their focus from floods to droughts and fires, writes Sky News Australia Meteorologist Rob Sharpe.

Australia has been in an on-and-off relationship with La Nina for the best part of three years. The rain-inducing phenomenon peaked in spring and has since been slowly weakening throughout the summer. The Pacific Ocean is warming back towards normal and ocean currents will support that process for at least another couple of weeks.

If the bureau gets cold feet - it’s because the thresholds haven’t quite been met, delaying the break-up for another fortnight. Australia’s experience of La Niña is based on what is going on in the atmosphere. But La Niña is defined by what goes on in the ocean. The national weather focus in 2023 will likely switch from floods to bushfires as La Nina is replaced by its warmer counterpart El Nino, writes Sky News Australia meteorologist Rob Sharpe. Picture: Supplied by NSW Rural Fire ServiceIt doesn’t have a lag effect and therefore it’s influence should be gone within the next couple of weeks.

The story goes that virtually all global forecast models are suggesting a high risk of El Niño for our next spring and summer.

Bridgetown GP Dr Sarah Youngson said local children being “erratic” and “impulsive” at libraries and skateparks seemed to be “linked” to increased consumption of energy drinks. Local retailers have expressed their unanimous support for the four-month restriction trial. “Which is amazing given that it has the potential to impact on them … but they’re so community-minded and can see the benefits of participating in the study,” Dr Youngson told Sky News Australia.
