An 18-year-old who sexually assaulted his sister over several years, starting when he was 13, avoids jail after the court hears she never wanted him charged.
The crime came to light when the girl disclosed the facts to a school counsellor, revealing she'd been assaulted at least 10 times between the ages of 11 and 14.The victim told police at one point the girl told her brother "this isn't normal"."No one will find out," he said. In her victim impact statement, the girl said she felt she'd not been given a voice in the legal process."I made my statement in the moment."
But she said there was nothing to show he knew the depth of the wrongfulness of his conduct or the harm that it would cause. She acknowledged the boy had suffered significant specific deterrence, having had to leave his family and face the court.
