Parents are being warned to limit distractions when children are in or near water, ahead of school holidays.
Dr Amy Peden told Sky News “We looked at coronial data for the last 15 years of child drowning deaths in Australia and we wanted to work out why parents and caregivers are getting distracted leading to those
lapses in supervision”. “Surprisingly we found indoor and outdoor household duties to be the leading causes of distraction and we expected smartphones to be higher, but they were actually the fourth leading cause”.
