Some Sydney councils say they have been 'left with no option' but to suspend its childcare services blaming the government's relief package | AngusGthompson

"This anomaly in the way the childcare relief package has been designed leaves council, and all local government providers of childcare services, in a position where it is no longer viable to provide childcare services without incurring significant loss," Mr McNulty said.

Council-run childcare centres in Sydney say they are closing because of the federal government's funding package.Under the free childcare system, which began on Monday, centres are to be paid 50 per cent of their revenue by the government, with the calculation based on enrolment levels before the mass exodus of children from schools at the start of March.

She said councils faced a real risk of having to cut back on other essential services, infrastructure and staff in response to the COVID-19 crisis. Mr McNulty, who said Cumberland would be suspending services from April 20, said the council had written to all levels of government to express its concerns.
