Chilly start in Queensland as relaxed coronavirus restrictions kick in with cold snap

, for some Queensland residents it might be too cold to enjoy them, with temperatures across some areas in the state's south dropping below zero for the first time this year.

The Bureau of Meteorology said temperatures at Oakey got down to -0.4 degrees Celsius and Kingaroy -0.1C. BOM senior forecaster Sam Campbell said most of central and southern Queensland got down to single figures, including 3C at Ipswich and Charleville and 1C at Roma. The sudden change has been caused by a cold air mass from the southern oceans pushing up north, with even Cairns and Townsville getting down to 20C."Temperatures are likely to stay below the average over the [state's] interior for the next seven days," he said.

The temperature in Applethorpe on the state's Granite Belt reached 4.3C at 5:30am, with an apparent temperature of -1.4C."It has been colder. It's the wind factor today," he said.
