Residents of Xi'an — a city where thousands of terracotta sculptures depicting the armies of China's first emperor were discovered in 1974 — are not allowed to leave the city unless they have extenuating circumstances and approval from officials.A large number of flights from Xi'an's airport have also been cancelled.

Mr Zhang said he was not that worried about daily necessities, as the government said there were abundant supplies. "I am torn up inside and thinking I won't be able to go home for the New Year," posted Weibo user Yi Yan Xian Che.
