Health authorities in northern China's port city of Tianjin have detected the first case of the Omicron coronavirus variant, potentially challenging the country's strict zero-COVID approach.
China's vaccination rate is among the world's highest and authorities have begun administering booster shots as winter descends.
It has reported just over 4,600 deaths compared to almost 800,000 in the US, a country with less than a quarter of the population. The strategy continues now, even as the government says it has vaccinated more than 82 per cent of the country's 1.41 billion people.
