The Chinese Ministry of Foreign Affairs said Nancy Pelosi's visit to Taiwan had disregarded China's 'grave concerns and firm opposition' as they imposed sanctions against the US house speaker and her immediate family members.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs also announced eight countermeasures against the US, in response to Ms Pelosi's"disregard of China's strong opposition and serious representations"., including Theatre Commanders talk, Defence Policy Coordination Talks, Military Maritime Consultative Agreement meeting and cooperation on the repatriation of illegal immigrants.

Ms Pelosi's visit to Taiwan infuriated Beijing, with Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi describing it as"manic, irresponsible and irrational". Beijing has continued to launch numerous threats to Taiwan, firing missiles near the island's north-east and south-west coast after Ms Pelosi left Taipei on Wednesday.

Just hours after Ms Pelosi left the island on Wednesday, Beijing sent dozens of Chinese aircraft to cross Taiwan's air defence zone - as the island scrambled to monitor activities amid invasion fears.
