ANALYSIS: 'China still thinks they're the motherland': Why Beijing poses a threat to ethnic Chinese in our region
Australia is home to a large, ethnic Chinese diaspora of more than 1.2 million.
Efforts to court political and economic support of ethnic Chinese in the region, Strangio said, "is reawakening those old fears of dual-loyalties". Just on Australia's doorstep, China's influence already outweighs that of the US, and will only grow further.Most South-East Asian international relations observers see China as more influential in the region than the US.
All 10 member states of the Association of South-East Asian Nations , and neighbouring Timor Leste, have signed on.
