The number of active coronavirus cases in the city centre has surged by almost 100 since Thursday, new data from the state's health department shows.
Coronavirus infections in the City of Melbourne have surpassed the hotspot of Hume, with the CBD recording the highest ever number of active cases in a single Victorian municipality.
More than 70 per cent of all cases recorded in the City of Melbourne since the start of the pandemic are infections which are currently active, with most spreading to residents living in those areas in the past 10 days. "There are some postcodes that are really significant and showing up in terms of transmission," Professor Sutton said.
Of the 288 new cases of coronavirus reported since Thursday, only 26 have been linked to existing outbreaks, while 262 remain under investigation.
