Five years ago, Coles pushed the button on the single biggest technology investment in its history: automated distribution starting in Redbank, Brisbane.

About 1.2 tonnes of pallets can be lifted by cranes taking advantage of the 35-metre roof space where products get stored, nearly three times taller than Coles’ standard distribution centres. The facility will service 219 stores and can hold more than 18,000 varieties of dry grocery products , compared with 11,000 items in other warehouses.

In addition to the two Witron sites, two customer fulfilment centres in NSW and Victoria are being constructed in partnership with online grocery company Ocado. These are designed for single-picking to send items to customers for home delivery in the supermarkets and liquor businesses. Another major saving will be energy costs. The Redbank site has LED and sensor lighting to reduce energy consumption and is fitted with a 180,000 litres of harvested rainwater. There are plans for 3.5 megawatts of solar installation.
