The tiny beetle that can kill a mature tree within years, is found in two trees in Perth's hills, sparking concerns about further spread.
The discovery shows the beetle, which can kill a tree in two years, has spread beyond the official quarantine area.There are fears the invasive pest could spread to Australia's east coast and authorities are urging the public to check their trees for signs of the borer and report any occurances.The polyphagous shot-hole borer, a tiny beetle that can kill a tree within years, has been found in two trees in the Perth hills suburb of Lesmurdie, beyond the established quarantine zone.
"Kalamunda is very protective of our forests and to know that it's that close to the forest is very concerning." Ms Thomas said the affected trees would be cut down and trees in the area inspected by the Department of Primary Industries and Regional Development to see if the borer had spread further.WA Minister for Agriculture Jackie Jarvis said the detection of the borer beyond the boundaries of the quarantine zone, within which DPIRD aims to eradicate the beetle, was "incredibly concerning".
He questioned whether the initial response had been strong enough since the borer was first detected in an East Fremantle backyard in 2021.
