AFL: Bombers coach Brad Scott has explained his plan to implement long term success at Essendon.
Essendon faces increased expectations in year two under Brad Scott in 2024, with a supporter base running out of patience. There were promising signs in Scott’s first year as coach, starting 8-5 – including winning four of their first five games – before the wheels fell off in the second half of the season, with defence again a big issue.
“When you think about Reid, Cox, Jones, Perkins, Hobbs and Caldwell – you put them all together and it is a profile that doesn’t look that dissimilar to the players at clubs who are rebuilding,” Scott told The Herald Sun. Or is long-term stability more important and setting up the club to contend for flags over the next eight years?“I know Matthew Lloyd said Essendon fans should tear down Windy Hill if they don’t make finals. But it’s not Brad Scott or the current crew’s fault they’ve been garbage for two decades.Herald Sun journalist Sam Landsberger however argued the club’s off-season moves send mixed messages.
Importantly, the Dons did retain Darcy Parish and Mason Redman’s signatures last year and through the trade period showed they’re still a destination club. Triple premiership winning Lion Jonathan Brown believes the Bombers will finish in the bottom four, saying he’s still unsure on how the quality of their youngsters.
