The Australian National University will offer current Year 12 students the chance to apply for admission for next year, based on their Year 11 results.

Vice-Chancellor, Professor Brian Schmidt, said the ANU already considered prior results and extra-curricular activities in its admissions.

"Our intent is to provide confidence to students about what their future is going to look like. Give them knowledge of what the possibilities are. The offer is being made to current Year 12 students, who apply before 25 May 2020. Ms Bishop said they were expecting 2,500 students to be admitted under the new process. However, Professor Schmidt dismissed calls from current students to slash fees to reflect the move to online learning.

Australians ‘can’t just delete a year of our lives’ due to the threat of coronavirus | Sky News AustraliaAustralians ‘can’t just delete a year of our lives’ due to the threat of coronavirus | Sky News AustraliaWhile Australia is flattening the coronavirus curve as a nation we are still “a long way off” seeing the relaxing of strict social distancing restrictions, so for now we just better “get used” to them, says Sky News host Peter Gleeson. \n\nThe rate of new coronavirus infections has slowly but steadily been dropping across Australia over the past number of days, something which has led to widespread optimism the nation might be getting on top of the deadly pandemic. \n\n“Australia is flattening the curve and there are significant positives coming out of the numbers compared to other countries,” Mr Gleeson said. \n\nHowever, “relaxing restrictions are still a long way off”. \n\n“In fact, the biggest challenge facing Scott Morrison and the National Cabinet right now is the difficult balancing act between ensuring the virus numbers don’t spike dramatically, while at the same time ensuring the country doesn’t go broke over the next six months”. \n\nMr Gleeson said while numerous different approaches to tacking the virus into the future have been discussed, it appears as though the “most likely option is the status quo, a gradual recovery, but with massive social and fiscal implications”. \n\nHe also called for sports competitions and racing to be back up and running soon because as a nation, “we can’t just delete a year of our lives”. \n\nImage: Getty
