A plane carrying about 180 Australians from the coronavirus hit cruise ship the Diamond Princess has left Japan bound for Darwin.

Their evacuation comes amid a soaring number of coronavirus cases aboard the cruise ship with more than 540 people now infected.

Minister for Population, Cities and Urban Infrastructure Alan Tudge said no passengers were to board the plane if “they had any symptoms of the coronavirus or tests positive to the virus”. They will be placed in quarantine at the Howard Springs Workers village for the next 14 days. Image: AP
