Formula E racing looks like Formula One but sounds very different, and organisers are hoping electric car racing will plug into a younger audience.

Speaking from London, Formula E's head of partnerships David Warren said Adelaide was the preferred venue for a race in Australia.

"Adelaide has the experience of hosting large motorsport events but at the same time, I think there is … an attitude of embracing the future," he said. "I don't want to put the cart before the horse though. The most positive response from Australia has been Adelaide but there has to be a willingness that they want us there.""We're not asking for the State Government to be the big bank," Dunis explained. He said the Government was not looking to pursue a standalone Formula E race in the near future given its significant cost.

"But we will continue to have open dialogue with Formula E proponents and if and when it becomes a viable option for South Australian taxpayers, we will consider it," he said."We're looking at almost all the sponsorship being funded by private industry, but we do need Adelaide City Council support and we're working on the State Government," he said.

Dunis said the organisation would need about $10 million in sponsorship and, on his figures, the benefits for the city would be about $45 million.
