Here is an idea to help Melbourne's pubs and restaurants to keep afloat as COVID-19 restrictions are gradually eased
RMIT Centre for Urban Research planner Thami Croeser, who advises the European Union, thinks Melbourne should follow suit."When you've got businesses that literally can't fit more than five or six tables inside, you can close the road and double their customers, potentially, which is the difference in staying afloat and not," he said.
However, each diner will need four square metres of space and each table will need to be 1.5 metres apart, meaning some restaurants will be able to fit many less customers. They are part of what has been coined 'tactical urbanism': low-cost, short-term improvements to cities such as food trucks and guerilla gardening.
Mr Croeser, who used to work for the City of Melbourne, also suggested road closures and taping off entire parking lots, like in Copenhagen. These could be temporary and/or limited to part of the day or week. "That would be so much trading space," he said. "Imagine that, a little Sunday afternoon pop up outside the pub, I think that could be really lovely."
