Nationals Senator Matt Canavan says the coronavirus cannot be extinguished so authorities should be concerned with making sure “we’re nimble enough to respond to issues as they arise”. The border between NSW and Victoria is set to close from 11:59pm on Tuesday in a bid to prevent Melbourne’s surge in coronavirus cases spreading north, which is expected to cause problems for twin-city communities such as Albury-Wodonga.
Mr Canavan told Sky News while it was inconvenient for those impacted by the closures, he was in favour of border closures and travel restrictions in a targeted approach. “It would be worthwhile us looking at sharper rather than blunter measures in response to local outbreaks,” he said. “That means more targeted lockdowns, more targeted restrictions on travel where the actual outbreaks are occurring.
