Democrat Beto O'Rourke has announced he is running for US president, joining a crowded field of candidates vying to challenge Donald Trump in 2020.
"The only way for us to live up to the promise of America is to give it our all and to give it for all of us," O'Rourke, 46, said in a video release. O'Rourke planned to follow his announcement with a trip to Iowa, the state that will hold the first Democratic nominating contest in February 2020.With his presidential effort, O'Rourke is hoping to leverage the fame he gained with his Senate race.Ted Cruz in mostly conservative Texas, but he quickly demonstrated an ability to draw large crowds and raise money from voters nationwide.
Since his Senate bid ended, O'Rourke has worked to keep himself in the public eye, regularly staying in touch with his supporters and sitting for an interview with Oprah Winfrey.
