A pet dog which attacked and killed its owner and seriously injured his female companion at a property in Tasmania's south was 'similar to a rottweiler', the local council says — but an expert urges people not to blame the breed, which he says are often misidentified.
Further details about a dog responsible for a fatal attack in Tasmania's south on Sunday have been released by a local council.RSPCA Tasmania and the National Rottweiler Council say dog attacks are not breed-specific, and that owners should be alert to any dog's behavioural cues.
During Monday's press conference, authorities did not disclose the breed of dog that caused the injuries. But Ms Davis said it was important not to focus on the breed of dog, but rather the behaviour of individual animals. "How to ensure all dog owners are made responsible for the actions of their dogs, and how to reduce the risk of any dog within the general population exhibiting aggressive or dangerous behaviour towards people."Dog-related injuries resulted in 9,542 people being hospitalised in 2021-22, according to the Australian Institute of Health and Welfare
