Two men died in a head-on collision on the Bruce Highway in Queensland, prompting renewed demands for safety upgrades to the major road.

A double fatality on the Fraser Coast in Queensland has renewed calls to urgently fix the state’s major highway. Two men were killed and an 11-year-old child was seriously injured in the two-car crash on the Bruce Hwy around 8am Friday morning at Owanyilla. Queensland Police said a 43-year-old man from Kallangur was heading southbound in a white Hyundai hatchback, which collided head-on with a white Volkswagen van driven by a 57-year-old man from Buddina. Both men died at the scene.

The 11-year-old passenger of the van was airlifted by rescue helicopter to Sunshine Coast University Hospital in a serious but stable condition. The fatalities come after Queensland recorded 302 deaths in 2024, the highest road toll in 15 years. Colin Dwyer from the Northern Bruce Action Group told 7NEWS 41 deaths were on the Bruce Highway last year, up from an average of 29.5 deaths in previous years. “It’s getting to emergency status, where we really have to do something about the highway,” he said. “One of the problems that we have is almost 50 per cent of the crashes on the highway are head-on. “The safety of the Bruce Highway should be brought up to a 4 or 4.5-star rating.” The Northern Bruce Action Group is expected to meet with the Transport Minister on Wednesday to discuss safety on the Bruce Highway from Gladstone to Cairns. Mr Dwyer told 7NEWS he believed the government should scrap a 15-year action plan and go back to stage one. “We need to build more overtaking lanes, especially on the northern part of the Bruce Highway,” he said. “That’ll reduce those head-on crashes, but also replacing old and very narrow bridges. “We also need more run-off barriers on roads.” He argued restoring an 80:20 funding split between the commonwealth and state governments would allow Queensland to consider building dual-lane, separated carriageways like in New South Wale
