A Northern Territory Senator has urged Peter Dutton to stop using Alice Springs as a “political football” amid the Opposition leader’s visit to the crime-plagued town.
The Liberal leader, who has previously called for a royal commission into the abuse of Indigenous children,Although not citing a particular case, Mr Dutton on Wednesday said if youth in other cities were placed back in the hands of abusers, then there would be outrage until it was rectified.
He added that it’s “accepted as normal practice” in Alice Springs, before repeating similar comments on Thursday. “I would ask Opposition leader Peter Dutton, if you are aware of this, then you need to mandatory report it to police so that there can be an investigation immediately, and if you have not done that I would urge you to do so as soon as possible.”Business owners in Alice Springs, like Darren, need help now to prevent further damage and loss to their business.Ms McCarthy said the “irresponsible accusations” must be followed up by the Opposition leader.
On Wednesday Mr Dutton appeared alongside Jacinta Price and local business owner Darren Clark, where they all demanded more government attention.
