An e-scooter battery explosion in Sydney has left a man injured, marking the fourth e-bike or e-scooter fire in the city within a 12-hour period. Fire officials warn of the increasing danger posed by lithium-ion batteries and urge caution when charging and handling these devices.
A man in his 40s sustained shrapnel and burn injuries after the battery of his e-scooter exploded at a residence on Yalta St in Sadleir, Sydney, around 7:40 am on Thursday. Fire and Rescue NSW Superintendent Adam Dewberry confirmed that three fire trucks and 12 firefighters were dispatched to the scene. The fire was extinguished, but firefighters remained on site to cool down the battery and mitigate the ongoing risk.
The injured man declined hospital transportation after being assessed by paramedics. This incident marks the fourth e-bike or e-scooter fire in New South Wales (NSW) within a 12-hour period, all occurring in Sydney. Dewberry stated that there have been a total of 11 battery-related fires in NSW since Sunday. A recent case on the Gold Coast highlighted the dangers of lithium-ion batteries overheating. A homeowner discovered his e-scooter battery becoming excessively hot and, unaware of the proper course of action, placed it in the freezer. This proved ineffective, as the battery continued to heat up, ultimately exploding and igniting a fire. Southport Fire Station officer Brenton Mazey explained that attempting to cool a lithium-ion battery overheating in a freezer is not a solution and can exacerbate the situation. He emphasized the significant fire hazard posed by lithium-ion batteries and the importance of public awareness regarding their dangers. Mazey urged caution when charging scooters overnight, particularly while sleeping.Mazey stressed the increasing frequency of these types of fires and recommended immediate safety measures if a battery overheats. He advised moving the battery to a safe open area, such as a field, or even dropping it into a pool or the road. If the battery is too hot to handle, he urged individuals to evacuate the house and contact emergency services
