A fire has ripped through a Gold Coast apartment after a resident tried to cool an overheating e-scooter battery in a freezer.
Authorities say the fire started when a man tried to cool an overheating lithium-ion battery from an e-scooter in a freezer. Firefighters say the batteries are increasingly causing building fires and people need to be more aware of the danger.
"Once it starts it's called thermal runaway and it will continue then explode and catch fire. It's a very powerful battery and causes a really big fire."Firefighters are urging people not to mix and match their lithium-ion battery chargers due to the increasing risk of a fire or explosion. The firefighter said there had been an increase in incidents involving the batteries in Queensland.
"Charging e-scooters at night, lithium-ion batteries at night, is a big danger in the houses. If they do ignite, malfunction or catch onto thermal runaway, they will cause an intense fire really quickly. "Even with phones, if you feel like it's getting too hot, you've just got to take it outside and bring it to the safest place you can," he said."Drop it in a pool, the middle of the road, just obviously not inside the structure of your house or bedrooms if you can.
