CEO Mark Allison says 22 autonomous guided vehicles will be moving around a new high-tech facility in outer Melbourne by mid-2023.

is part-way through a $25 million investment in a new wool handling business where a large facility on the outskirts of Melbourne will have 22 electric driverless vehicles helping to move wool bales.

Chief executive Mark Allison said the company had given it the green light because its market share in the wool industry had been rising and was now at 20 per cent. The company was established 183 years ago. Elders lost its way expanding into forestry, telecommunications, aquaculture, insurance and automotive components and almost collapsed in 2008 during the global financial crisis because it was carrying almost $1.4 billion in debt.

The Ravenhall facility will have seven charging stations for the electric autonomous guided vehicles. The driverless units will be operated through a high-tech software network which is part of the $25 million in capital spending.
