Opinion: Scott Morrison’s legacy will be a shadow of his predecessor prime ministers
It is a sad commentary on political life that most of our elected representatives leave little to mark their years representing the people. Few get to be a minister, and many experience only the cold reality of the irrelevance of life as an opposition backbencher.
If your next dinner party is getting dull and charades no longer amuses, try this for a laugh: run through recent premiers and prime ministers and capture their careers in just a few words. Dan Andrews takes the credit or the blame for Melbourne’s marathon lockdown, but also abortion reform, the breakthrough on voluntary assisted dying and removing level crossings.
Previous gathering: Bob Hawke, Gough Whitlam, Malcolm Fraser, Paul Keating and Kevin Rudd at the apology to the stolen generations at Parliament House in 2008.Bob Hawke? The Prices and Incomes Accord, pure and simple. Medicare, globalising Australia’s economy, the Sex Discrimination Act and making crying in public acceptable for Australian men. Extraordinary when you aggregate such massive economic and cultural shifts in our nation.
Julia Gillard left the stage with the misogyny speech, the NDIS and the royal commission into institutional child abuse as her calling cards. Impressive by any standard.
