The crash has sparked renewed calls for the government to investigate all fatal aviation incidents. Local aviation groups are paying tribute to two experienced pilots killed in a plane crash on the mid-north coast of New South Wales.
Mr White was the chief flying instructor at Mid Coast Microlights, an aviation school where Mr Peutrill had also previously worked as an instructor. Vice-president of Coffs Harbour Aero Club Don Townsend said both men were fixtures in the local aviation community. 'Mark had been with a pilot school for many years and has a lot of hours flying, Simon has quite a few hours as an instructor as well,' Mr Townsend said. 'Definitely fairly experienced, particularly Mark, he had a lot of hours in that aeroplane and Simon certainly had some, as he'd been instructing there previously.'John 'Fred' Sercombe, who volunteers with Coffs Harbour community radio station 2AIR-FM, said Mr Peutrill was also a beloved member of their local radio team.'Beautifully organised, also up with the latest … he produce a beautiful program out of nothing.'Detectives with the NSW Police Maritime Area Command are conducting an investigation into the cause of the crash, with authorities working to recover plane wreckage from the Scotts Head area, approximately 70 kilometres south of Coffs Harbour.
