Holidaymakers heading to coastal and inland areas of Australia's south-east after Christmas face potentially 'extreme heatwave' conditions that will also elevate the already heightened fire risks
Holidaymakers heading to coastal and inland areas of Australia's south-east after Christmas face potentially "extreme heatwave" conditions that will also elevate the already heightened fire risks.
With some much inland heat available it only needs north-westerly winds to develop to push that hot air into Australia's more populous south-east. Extreme heatwave conditions will extend to southern parts of NSW, including the South Coast, and to Victoria's north-east from the weekend onwards, Graeme Brittain, a meteorologist with Weatherzone, said.
Many heat records have been smashed in December, particularly for days above certain thresholds. Climate scientists have long warned that heatwaves would become more frequent, more intense and last longer as the planet heats up.
