Face masks 'close to useless' against bushfire smoke | rachelclun

A bushfire smoke expert has warned face masks are "close to useless" as the number of emergency department and ambulance call-outs for breathing difficulties increases.

People are seen wearing face masks to protect from smoke haze as they cross a busy street in Sydney's CBD on Thursday."That really won't protect you from the health effects of smoke because it’s the finer particles that we worry about with smoke, so they’re not a good solution all in all," she said. A NSW Health spokesman said despite the increase, hospitals were "well prepared" to deal with emergency situations like bushfires. The department recommends people with respiratory conditions to avoid outdoor physical activity, and for people with conditions including asthma to follow their treatment plan."Smoke might cause no more than eye or throat irritation for most people, but those with known respiratory conditions, like asthma, need to be cautious," the spokesman said.

The City of Sydney said they were working with the state government to help rough sleepers who were also affected by the smoke.
