Fatima Payman unveiled her new party, Australia's Voice, on Wednesday. "Together we will hold our leaders accountable and ensure that your voice, Australia's voice, will never be silenced." She said candidates would be selected "on merit and value alignment" but she would "ensure they have the opportunity to exercise a conscience vote". Several First Nations leaders involved in the Yes campaign for a First Nations Voice in the recent referendum have privately expressed frustration with the use of the word "Voice" by the party, saying permission was not sought.
She said her political approach would emphasise "practicality and pragmatism," drawing a contrast with the Greens who she said "go way too far".She also distanced herself from the Labor Party, despite affirming she retained "Labor values" when she quit the party. She arrived in Australia as a child refugee, after her family fled the Taliban in Afghanistan. Prior to entering politics, she was an organiser at the United Workers' Union and president of WA Labor's youth wing.
