“We can no longer sit by while our voices are drowned out by the same old politics. It’s time to stand up, to rise together and to take control of our future,” Payman told a press conference in Parliament House. Payman on Wednesday described her party as being “for the disenfranchised, the unheard and those yearning for real change”. She quoted former prime ministers from both major parties in explaining the voters she wished to represent.
The prime minister, Anthony Albanese, told the Australian Financial Review this week that Payman should quit the Senate, after being elected under Labor’s banner, to seek a mandate of her own. Payman’s term will expire in 2028, and there is no obligation for senators to step down if they quit their original party.
