Federal government, businesses sour on Victorian road map

The federal government will scrutinise Victoria's handling of the coronavirus pandemic and has warned extensions to the lockdown will result in more job losses | JennieDuke micksfoley

Business Council of Australia chief executive Jennifer Westacott said: "Businesses need predictability, they need to know basic things like what to order in time for Christmas."

But although the decision on restrictions and lockdowns is up to the states, the government pointed out NSW Premier Gladys Berejiklian's handling of outbreaks, which has used a hotspot approach rather than broad lockdowns, as the "way forward". Australian Labor Party deputy leader Richard Marles said it was a frustrating time but added the health advice must be the ultimate guide.

Victorian Liberal senator David Van said it was "heartbreak for business" with many to be forced into liquidation."If you own a business, there is nothing in this road map that will give you any comfort," he said.
