Specialist police armed with heavy rifles will begin patrols at Brisbane and Canberra airports in the coming weeks, as the government expands counter-terror operations.
The federal government will roll-out increased counter-terrorism measures over the next 18 months.
At least 130 extra police and protective service officers will be deployed, as well as dog squads used to detect firearms and explosives. The changes are part of a $107 million package to strengthen aviation security, which was announced in the most recent budget. Image: News Corp Australia

Australia is failing 'to ensure students leave school with competence' | Sky News AustraliaDr Fiona Mueller from the Centre for Independent Studies has dubbed Australian student’s falling grades as a “failure” to ensure children are equipped for life.\n\n“What we are seeing is the failure to ensure that all of our students across the country are able to leave school with confidence and [to be] competent in the various areas we have deemed to be critical for life,” Dr Mueller told Sky News. \n\n“The most worrying thing really is the effect on our children.”\n\nDr Mueller’s comments come after the release of the Programme for International Student Assessment results, which shows Australian students are falling behind other developed countries in reading, maths and science.\n\nAustralian students are falling years behind the rest of the world in numeracy and literacy, according to the 2018 Programme for International Student Assessment (PISA) report.\n\nAustralian students are now three years behind Chinese students of the same age in mathematics. \n\n“Our first prime minister, Edmund Barton, said it was the duty of the state to educate,” Dr Mueller told Sky News host Andrew Bolt. \n\n“Clearly we are not doing that for all children.” \n
