The Morrison government will roll out a national threatened species strategy by the end of the year that will include a strong focus on controlling feral predators and weeds | micksfoley

Environment Minister Sussan Ley said native animals and plants were facing enormous challenges.

Ms Ley’s announcement of the new strategy follows a controversial fortnight for environment policy in federal parliament which culminated in the Morrison government voting to gag debate to fast-track a controversial bill to devolve major project approval powers.which has not slowed since colonisation. Leading causes of native extinction include feral predators, namely cats and foxes, as well as land clearing and habitat degradation, which is caused by major agriculture and resources projects.

Ms Ley will consult with scientists, land managers, traditional owners, farmers, local and state governments, communities and environmental groups. Funding will include $200 million through the Morrison government’s bushfire recovery fund and its $200 million threatened species fund under the National Landcare Program and Environment Restoration Fund.
