Firefighters in New South Wales have spent the night strengthening containment lines and backburning ahead of one of the most dangerous days this fire season.
Hot and windy weather is expected to sweep across the state — with authorities predicting conditions worse than those on New Year's Eve.
Firefighters from Queensland, Western Australia and the Northern Territory are merging in NSW to help fight the fires. Thousands of tourists and residents on the state's south coast and Alpine and Riverina regions have evacuated. The Rural Fire Service said it's likely that some fires will move into untouched territory. Image: News Corp Australia
